A family design for a heavily armed Type 45

An unofficial Horizon-era design combines large missile batteries, layered close defence, helicopter capacity and modular electric power.

Notes

This unofficial family design exercise dates to the period when the Type 45 programme was still associated with Horizon. The proposed battery had two groups of 64 Sylver A50 cells and two groups of 32 Mark 41 cells, alongside four groups of 16 short-range missiles. It also included four 76 mm guns, four Phalanx-type close-in systems, a 5-inch gun and tubes for torpedoes of the type carried by helicopters. The aviation spaces could accommodate two medium or three light helicopters. Four modular machinery rooms would each combine two diesel generators and a gas turbine to supply electrical power. A later comparison gives 128 Aster missiles and 64 CAMM, with quad-packing of the Mark 41 cells potentially raising the total to 320 CAMM. These figures describe the imagined ship and its possible loads.
