Building more general-purpose frigates alongside specialist ships requires room in the construction programme. The two-yard allocation considered here puts Type 83 work after Type 26 at one yard and Type 32 work at Babcock. Additional Type 31 orders would therefore require more capacity or a different allocation of work. Cammell Laird is suggested as a possible builder, but bringing an unused slip into service would require funding while the yard handles other commitments. Extra orders depend on investment in production capacity as well as agreement on the ships themselves.

Why more frigates require more shipyard capacity
More Type 31 orders would need funded construction capacity alongside the proposed Type 32 and Type 83 programmes.
