An Invincible class enlarged by 10,000 tons

A carrier-size counterfactual links displacement to air-group depth, launch performance, and early warning.

Question

What could an Invincible-class carrier do with another 10,000 tons of standard displacement?

Short answer

It could operate many more Harriers and Sea Kings, use a longer deck and higher speed to launch heavier aircraft, and might field airborne early-warning Sea Kings before the Falklands War.

Notes

The extra tonnage is used for more than simply adding aircraft spots. A longer deck and greater speed over the deck would improve Harrier takeoff loads, while a much larger Sea King component creates room for a planned airborne early-warning detachment. Because the Falklands emergency conversion happened quickly, designing that role from the beginning could materially change the 1982 campaign.
