Britain's dormant supercarrier-sized dry dock

A surviving but inactive Southampton dry dock preserves the dimensions needed for exceptionally large ships.

Question

Could a British dry dock accommodate a US Navy supercarrier?

Short answer

Southampton's King George V dock was large enough in principle, although its gates had been removed and it would require recommissioning.

Notes

The King George V dock measured about 366 meters long, 41 meters wide, and 15 meters deep. Built in the 1930s for ships approaching 100,000 tons, it remained physically present with its pumping house but was no longer an operating dock. Accommodating a modern supercarrier would therefore be a recommissioning and modification project, not simply a routine docking visit.
