Britain's limited commercial shipbuilding base

Britain retains some commercial construction capacity, but its yards cannot match the cost and volume of the largest Asian producers.

Question

Can the United Kingdom still build freighters and liners as well as warships?

Short answer

It retains limited civilian capacity, but cannot compete on cost and volume with the world's largest commercial yards.

Notes

Naval yards such as Cammell Laird have broader construction skills, and ferry building preserves some civilian capability. Other British facilities could also undertake portions of commercial construction even though most surviving yards concentrate on naval work. The limiting factor is not a total absence of knowledge but the economics of scale. Korean and other high-volume yards can spread costs across far larger production runs.
