British aircraft specifications as design evidence

The British Aircraft Specifications File reveals the performance, operating, and armament requirements behind British aircraft projects from 1920 to 1949.

Notes

The reference collects official specifications from the era when British aircraft were commonly put to open tender, making it useful for comparing paper projects with aircraft that actually entered service. A Fleet Air Arm two-seat fighter requirement shows the constraints designers faced: carrier handling, endurance, low landing speed, armament, and structural strength. It sought about 275 knots at 15,000 feet, a landing speed no higher than 58 knots, six hours' endurance, folding wings usable in strong deck winds, and either eight Browning machine guns or four 20 mm cannon. The book helps explain procurement choices and counterfactual aircraft without treating a proposed design as a finished capability.
