The A5M as the Buffalo's contemporary benchmark

The contemporary Mitsubishi A5M and the Buffalo's four-gun armament provide a fairer 1939 benchmark than mature Zero variants fielded later.

Notes

The Mitsubishi A5M, which entered service in 1936, provides a fairer comparison for the Buffalo than the later A6M Zero. Its cited figures of about 270 mph, 648 nautical miles of range, and a 32,200-foot ceiling show why the Buffalo looked competitive in its own procurement period. The comparison places meaningful Zero service in late 1940 and emphasizes that the familiar A6M2B came farther into its production run. The Buffalo also carried four .50-caliber Browning machine guns, two in the nose and two in the wings, plus two underwing bomb racks. The argument credits it with respectable performance for a 1939 naval fighter, without claiming that it was exceptional.
