At about seven in the evening, Bellona and other British ships closed the French flagship group. The 74-gun ship opened fire at roughly a quarter mile, prompting Junon and Alceste to surrender rather than absorb a broadside they could not answer. Centaur had already divided Courageuse from the group and commenced firing. Bellona's arrival then made the mismatch between Courageuse's 12-pounders and two ships of the line conclusive. Emerald and Captain simultaneously overtook the brigs, whose surrender completed the capture of all five vessels.
