Barrow and the economics of a single-customer shipyard

The Barrow example asks how a sole specialist supplier and a government customer differ from an ordinary competitive market.

Notes

Company profit is acknowledged as a normal purpose of private enterprise. Barrow supplies a submarine-building example with one principal national customer and one national supplier. That relationship is offered as an argument for considering state ownership, because the customer and supplier depend heavily on one another. The comparison with the American frigate programme is explicitly partial: it does not assume that the two industrial markets are identical.
