The A-to-I sequence combined larger practical loads with a continuing emphasis on torpedo attack. Twin triple launchers in Amazon and Ambuscade gave way to quadruple mountings, then the I class's quintuple launchers. Four 4.7-inch guns remained part of the design while depth charges, ASDIC, and greater cruising range expanded its other duties. Some ships could also be equipped for minelaying. Official standard-displacement figures are treated sceptically because their small changes sit uneasily with the greater armament and equipment. Deep-load figures offer a better guide in this comparison, although they also require caution. The I class marks the end of the first Amazon-derived generation, with torpedoes still the leading weapon.

Successive alphabet classes gained torpedo tubes and supporting capabilities, while published displacement figures remained an uncertain guide to their growth.
