Aircraft spares and the Gloucester crew penalty

The ships gave up boxed reserve aircraft for extensive spares, while the tightly packed Gloucester machinery required a larger maintenance crew.

Notes

Only three aircraft were carried operationally because dismantled reserves required too much handling. The ships carried extensive spares instead, enough to maintain the embarked flight and, in the video's estimate, rebuild one or two aircraft. This arrangement supported aviation endurance without counting boxed airframes as immediately usable aircraft. The Gloucester group needed more personnel than the larger Edinburghs because its machinery was packed into a Southampton-sized space. Poor access made maintenance slower and raised the number of people required on each watch. Internal arrangement affected manpower as much as overall displacement: the roomier Edinburghs needed only about 33 more personnel than the Southamptons despite their greater size.
