Gas turbines could make Abdiel a faster, more heavily armed minelayer

Six 15,000-horsepower turbines and established dual-purpose 4.7-inch mounts could give the Abdiels more speed and heavier armament while retaining their mine load.

Notes

The Abdiel hull could exploit approximately 90,000 shaft horsepower while retaining its 156-mine load. A three-shaft arrangement with two turbines per shaft would still provide about 45,000 horsepower in an economical mode before the second set was engaged. The estimate treats 11,000-15,000 horsepower per unit as achievable with mid-1930s metallurgy, with substantially more development needed above about 20,000. The hull had historically reached around 38 knots, and the extra power could raise that already high speed. If the Tribal program has already matured the original dual-purpose 4.7-inch mount, the class could combine exceptional speed with six such guns in three twin turrets.
