York reveals the limits of overseas dockyards

York's career at Bermuda shows how cruiser size had to fit a worldwide network of docks and repair facilities.

Notes

Completed in 1930, York first served as flagship of the Home Fleet's Second Cruiser Squadron and later of the Eighth Cruiser Squadron on the North America and West Indies Station. At Bermuda she became the largest vessel yet lifted by Admiralty Floating Dock No. 1. Accommodating York required the dock's almost complete reconstruction despite the Royal Navy's extensive global base network. Naval design was constrained by the dimensions and capacity of overseas repair infrastructure as well as by weapons and treaty displacement.
