Wyoming packed twelve guns into a slow turret farm

The Wyoming class shows how the US Navy gained a twelve-gun broadside while accepting six twin turrets, crowded after arcs, and a 20.5-knot speed.

Notes

The Wyoming class grew to about 26,000 tons and carried twelve 12-inch guns in six twin turrets. Four turrets crowded the after deck, with two superfiring over two lower mounts to create a visible turret farm on the plan. Four Parsons turbines and four screws did not make the ships fast: their maximum was about 20.5 knots, slightly below the preceding Florida class. The design delivered a formidable broadside by investing heavily in turret count rather than tactical speed. American paper firepower must be read alongside layout and mobility.
