Would the Japanese carriers bring Zeroes or Claudes?

Most Japanese fighters were still A5M Claudes, but concentrating the new A6M Zeroes on two deployed carriers could make a modern air group possible.

Question

Would the deployed Japanese carriers operate A6M Zeroes or A5M Claudes in 1940?

Short answer

The fleet mostly had Claudes, but Japan could concentrate enough early Zeroes on the two carriers sent west.

Notes

Most Japanese carrier fighters were still A5M Claudes. The Zero and Val were entering service, and Japan could not equip all its carriers with the newest aircraft at once. Deploying two carriers would let the navy concentrate its available modern aircraft in the expedition. Kates were easier to provide because they were already established in service. The size of the deployment therefore reflects aircraft availability as well as the number of carrier hulls.
