Why hard-worked warships may look weathered

Rust and grime can reflect a demanding operating schedule when ships spend long periods at sea and repaint during port calls.

Notes

A heavy operating schedule can leave an active warship looking rusty or dirty between port calls. US Navy ships provide the contemporary example, with the Royal Navy at its height as the historical comparison. In that comparison, British ships needed repainting on reaching port because they spent so much time at sea. Calling cleaner foreign ships museum pieces turned their immaculate appearance into a criticism of how little they operated. The point is that visible wear can accompany intensive service.
