William White's 245-ship construction record

White's construction record measures the institutional scale behind the late-Victorian Royal Navy and complicates his later reputation as a micromanager.

Notes

Across sixteen years as Director of Naval Construction, White oversaw designs for 43 battleships, 26 armoured cruisers, 102 protected cruisers, and 74 unarmoured warships. That amounts to 245 ships and about £80 million in contemporary expenditure. White's adopted motto, "Build staunch and true," captures the professional standard he tried to apply to that output. The Blake class is judged one of the strongest products of his tenure. His career also included work as a patron and educator, a reputation easily obscured by the micromanagement associated with its end.
