Udaloys account for most of the surviving Russian destroyer force described here, while the status of some late survivors remains disputed. Their retention may partly reflect interest in anti-submarine warfare, although Silex also has an anti-ship role. Permanent hangars provide another explanation. When maintaining a paired Udaloy-Sovremenny deployment becomes impractical, a single ship that can shelter and maintain its helicopters is easier to employ. The number of airframes visible aboard a ship also need not establish how many are operational.

Why Udaloy outlasted Sovremenny in Russian service
Udaloy's permanent hangars offer one explanation for its retention when Russia could no longer sustain the earlier paired deployment model.
