Why no more battleships: justification and cost

Justification and cost together explain why battleship construction ended.

Notes

Battleships did not vanish because they became wholly useless. Their missions could increasingly be performed by other systems, while the disappearance of an opposing battle line removed the clearest reason to match them ship for ship. Their industrial and task-group costs also became harder to defend within shrinking proportional defence settlements. The decisive issue was whether their remaining utility justified buying them instead of more broadly useful forces.
