Why Early Cold War Aircraft Served for Decades

Long-lived aircraft such as the Tu-16 belonged to a generation designed for rough operating conditions and exceptionally hard landings.

Notes

The Tu-16's longevity was not simply an accident of Soviet inventory policy. Aircraft designed to operate with minimal infrastructure had to survive rough strips, limited maintenance facilities, and repeated hard use. Carrier aircraft took the same logic farther because every recovery was a controlled crash that demanded a strong airframe. Designs built around gentle runways and extensive support could be lighter, but they were less tolerant of punishment. Service life therefore depended partly on structural margins and expected operating conditions.
