Pairs deployed with the Lord Nelsons could make it much harder for Goeben to exploit her speed in the Mediterranean. Goeben can make about 25.5 knots and carries heavier guns, but two 28-knot cruisers can shadow her and choose when to close. They might postpone an engagement until darkness shortens visibility and reduces the German ship's long-range advantage. Their presence therefore strengthens the blockade and bombardment force around Gallipoli without requiring a North Sea battlecruiser.
