The Portsmouth reconstruction replaced Warspite's boilers and turbines and extensively rearranged her internal structure. Fuel consumption at roughly 24 knots fell from 41 to 27 tons per hour, turning two hours of high-speed steaming into about three for the same fuel. The new machinery delivered about 80,000 shaft horsepower while saving roughly 1,500 tons. About 1,100 tons of that saving went into protection over turrets, magazines, boiler rooms, and machinery. Additional subdivision and hull strengthening made the rebuilt ship more resistant to flooding and helped explain her later survival under severe damage.
