Comparing naval designs in their own context

Mission, equipment access and industrial capacity are better guides to a design than assumptions about national ingenuity.

Notes

Warship comparisons need to account for the technology, equipment, missions and industrial infrastructure available to each navy. Those differences do not establish that one country's designers are inherently more inventive than another's. Naval architecture has long involved international exchange alongside national decisions. A useful comparison asks which problem each ship was designed to solve.
