Walrus cruiser patrols in the South Atlantic

A cruiser-aircraft memoir shows how Walrus crews searched the South Atlantic, tried to stop German ships, and briefly captured a merchantman.

Notes

Shropshire and Sussex use their Walruses to search for German merchant ships attempting to leave southwest African ports. Three-hour patrols demand accurate navigation back to moving cruisers, and one missing Sussex aircraft prompts nine and a half hours of searching with repeated launches and landings. When a German-looking merchantman appears, the Walrus uses warning fire and tries to prevent the crew from abandoning or scuttling her. The air gunner then climbs aboard with a White Ensign before Shropshire arrives, although engineers cannot save the ship. Shropshire then uses the derelict for live practice with her 8-inch guns. The episode shows cruiser aircraft performing reconnaissance, interception, communication, and an improvised boarding role in support of trade protection.
