W.29 combat changed North Sea patrol tactics

W.29 attacks on flying boats, HMS C25, and escorted Short 184 patrol aircraft made the German maritime monoplane a serious North Sea threat in 1918.

Notes

W.29 formations combined maritime reconnaissance with attacks on aircraft and surfaced submarines. In June 1918, four W.29s shot down two Felixstowe F.2A flying boats and damaged a third. Another formation attacked HMS C25 on the surface, killing five men and puncturing its ballast tanks so that it had to return home without diving. By July, British Short 184 anti-submarine patrols carried Sopwith Camel escorts because of the German threat. In one encounter, a Camel's guns jammed and the escorts could not drive the W.29s away.
