Why the Vigilante excelled at tactical reconnaissance

The A-5 Vigilante began as a carrier-based nuclear bomber and became a fast tactical reconnaissance specialist.

Notes

The Vigilante began as a heavy carrier-based strategic bomber and became most useful as a medium-altitude tactical reconnaissance aircraft. This role provided time-sensitive battlefield information between persistent drone surveillance and broad satellite coverage. The information had to arrive quickly enough to shape an operation already under way. Later fighters fitted with reconnaissance equipment could cover parts of the mission, though they were compromises rather than full replacements for a specialist aircraft.
