Chapter · 1:31:13-1:32:06

Victoria Louise-class cruisers briefly return as wartime scouts

Five elderly cruisers mobilized into the Fifth Scouting Group before vulnerability and changing needs moved them into barracks and support service.

Notes

The five Victoria Louise-class protected cruisers were mobilized into the Fifth Scouting Group at the start of the war. Their return gave Germany immediate scouting numbers that its limited modern cruiser force could not readily spare. Victoria Louise herself survived an attack by a British submarine before moving to barracks service at Danzig. The class's short frontline return and longer support careers illustrate how mobilization value can be real even when combat suitability quickly declines.
