From Vickers' national systems to BAE's partnerships

Vickers once offered almost every element of national industrialization, while BAE's strength lies in joining other states' advanced defense programs as a trusted partner.

Notes

Vickers combined military production with the civil engineering and civilian manufacturing needed to equip a country. Railways, port infrastructure, bridges, sewers, aircraft, tanks, cars, and even typewriters fell within the range of the older conglomerate. That breadth makes a diversified firm such as Mitsubishi a closer analogy than a modern company concentrated on defence. BAE's business model instead centres on research and development partnerships across other nations' programmes, with F-35 and B-21 given as examples.
