Farragut's War of 1812 service placed him in combat at Valparaiso, where he was wounded and became a prisoner of war. Long voyages around South America and farther afield also accumulated navigation and ship-handling experience that would later shape his battle decisions. Assignment to USS Independence and USS Macedonian then moved his education beyond Porter's household and exposed him to prestigious ships-of-the-line service. This early combat and practical seamanship later shaped Farragut's command style.
