Would a US Navy purchase of the Buccaneer help save CVA-01?
Short answerOnly as part of a wider NATO bargain that made British carrier groups an explicit alliance requirement and changed national spending priorities.
NotesAircraft exports alone would not reverse the political case against CVA-01. The carrier could survive if a reciprocal Phantom-Buccaneer arrangement accompanied a NATO commitment for Britain to provide North Atlantic carrier groups. Such an alliance role would shift resources away from treating the British Army of the Rhine as the primary measure of Britain's NATO contribution. The panel stresses that this would reshape the whole defence programme, with possible consequences for later army equipment as well as naval aviation. It also notes the strategic oddity of a trade-dependent island leaving the carrier role, and describes the Invincible class as the cruiser programme's eventual route back toward carrier capability. The counterfactual works only as a change in alliance strategy and inter-service priorities, not as one American aircraft order.
