Why 'unsinkable' is the wrong warship test

Every warship can be sunk. Finding, targeting, and overwhelming a well-handled force can still demand immense effort.

Question

Which naval trope do you hate most?

Short answer

The binary idea that a ship must be unsinkable or is not worth building.

Notes

A warship's value does not depend on being impossible to sink. An enemy still has to find, target, and overwhelm the ship or its task group. Detection, maneuver, defenses, damage control, flooding, and fire all shape the result. Survivability is a spectrum, while loss ultimately follows uncontrolled flooding or fire.
