Chapter · 0:00-3:37

HMS Unicorn as more than a carrier

The opening explains why HMS Unicorn should be read as a forward aviation support ship rather than simply another Royal Navy aircraft carrier.

Notes

Unicorn's carrier-like appearance can obscure the job for which she was conceived. The Implacable-class fleet carriers represented a different expression of the Royal Navy's future carrier plans. The navy intended Unicorn to begin a class instead of remaining a one-off experiment. Her flight deck supported a wider purpose: carrying the workshops, stores, and coordination capacity needed to sustain fleet aviation.
