Will navies rely on dedicated drone ships, or make uncrewed systems part of ordinary warships and air groups?
Short answerUncrewed systems are more likely to extend the sensing, endurance, and anti-submarine reach of many ships than to create a wholly separate drone fleet.
NotesUncrewed systems can extend established naval roles without requiring a separate class of drone ship for every task. Their performance in Ukraine also depends on weaknesses in the adversary's organization and supply chain, so the vehicle alone does not explain the result. A frigate or destroyer could combine crewed helicopters with rotary UAVs carrying torpedoes, sonobuoys, or dipping sonar, while small uncrewed surface craft tow arrays nearby. Airborne sensors could see beyond a surface ship's radar horizon and cue defensive missiles, while signature-enhancing decoys could draw attacks away from a carrier. Submarine-launched vehicles could distribute tasks that have become harder as crewed submarines have grown larger and more complex. Together these systems add persistence, sensing, decoys, and local mass, allowing one ship to function as the center of a small task group.
