The Type IXD2 was a large submarine intended for distant operations, with a stated surfaced range of 23,700 nautical miles at 10 knots. Four bow tubes and two stern tubes were supplied with 24 torpedoes, supplemented by a 105 mm deck gun with 150 rounds. A 37 mm gun and two 20 mm guns provided anti-aircraft armament. That range enabled operations far beyond the Atlantic, including in the Indian Ocean, where U-177 sank Nova Scotia during her first patrol. Her own career ended after a Liberator dropped depth charges on the submarine, killing 50 men and leaving 15 survivors. USS Omaha recovered the surviving crew.
