Type 83 points toward a larger air-defence destroyer

Deeper missile magazines, FADS, anti-submarine warfare, and land attack point toward a larger hull with substantial computing capacity.

Notes

Type 83's operational requirements point toward a larger air-defence destroyer. A deeper missile magazine needs space and support systems. The Future Air Dominance System (FADS) must cover drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic weapons, while the ship is also expected to contribute to anti-submarine warfare and land attack. The rough estimates given here are an extra 60 metres for a Type 31-derived hull or 50 metres for a Type 26-derived hull, changes large enough to require a new hull design. Missile-control computing occupies substantial space, closer to data-centre equipment than a desktop computer. The design is therefore likely to grow before its final weapons are chosen.
