Class naming depends partly on which ships remain in commission at the same time. The Type 26 City class replaces the Type 23 Duke class, which keeps those two contemporary groups readily distinguishable. With Type 45 already carrying D-class nomenclature, Type 83 could continue with E-class names. This is a possibility rather than an announced decision. Naming traditions must fit fleet turnover as well as a new design's technical role.

Why a future Type 83 may avoid another City class
Royal Navy class names normally remain distinct while ships overlap in service, making an E-class Type 83 a possibility rather than another City class.
