A fuller Type 82 could have added aviation and layered defence

Larger Type 82 studies offered below-deck helicopter storage and a second launcher that could later support a more balanced missile fit.

Notes

Larger Type 82 studies could have placed helicopters below deck and moved them by lift to the flight deck. That arrangement would have slowed immediate access compared with a conventional hangar door, but it would still permit protected maintenance and sustained organic aviation. A second Sea Dart launcher and magazine forward would have improved firing arcs, magazine depth, and the ability to defend from more than one direction. The omission is especially striking because earlier Darings and Counties had already carried senior officers and adaptable command spaces as part of their large-destroyer role. Once Sea Wolf entered service in 1979, one of two launcher positions might also have been converted from Sea Dart to the new point-defence weapon. Such a refit would sacrifice some area-defence capacity while giving much stronger protection against incoming missiles, a threat Sea Dart had not originally been designed to defeat.
