Type 82 Bristol paired broad capability with costly omissions

HMS Bristol returned to the large fleet-destroyer role with flag facilities, but designers omitted a second Sea Dart launcher and helicopter hangar.

Notes

HMS Bristol was the Royal Navy's last large destroyer before the planned Type 83, but the Type 82 design emerged with only one Sea Dart launcher and no helicopter hangar. Designers assumed a carrier, cruiser, frigate, or County would always be nearby to host the aircraft. That economy made Bristol dependent on companions for organic aviation and left its principal air-defence battery without a second launcher. Flag facilities remained aboard, preserving part of the large fleet-destroyer role. These economies narrowed what a command destroyer could do on its own.
