The original machinery arrangement distributed the two diesel generators between the forward gas-turbine room and the aft machinery room. A separate forward machinery room had appeared in earlier plans as the position for additional diesel generators, although those extra sets were not fitted. The Power Improvement Project replaces the two two-megawatt generators with three three-megawatt sets, placing the third in that forward machinery room on five deck. The resulting nine megawatts give the integrated electric propulsion system more power to keep the ship and its equipment running. Diesel generation alone still cannot provide the highest speed, but it gives useful support when the turbines are performing poorly in heat. Work on the relationship between the turbines and their intercoolers has also improved their operation to an extent.

Reserved machinery space made a stronger diesel installation possible
The Power Improvement Project uses the forward machinery room for a third generator, raising diesel output to nine megawatts while retaining gas turbines for maximum speed.
