The proposed British Type 31 role combines its 57 mm and 40 mm guns with Sea Ceptor as a flak frigate inside a task group. Positioned near a carrier or fleet auxiliary, it could engage threats that penetrate outer air-defence layers. This would give Type 45 or future Type 83 destroyers more freedom in their air-defence positioning and let Type 26 frigates concentrate on ASW. The preference is to keep Type 31 within the formation, avoiding a distant picket station. Its size allows adaptation and capable long-range radars, while the Thales TACTICOS combat management system can integrate different sensors and weapons.
