Type 31's forward-based sloop role

Type 31's guns and forward basing suit routine presence and sloop-like work, while larger British combatants retain the more coercive diplomatic missions.

Notes

Routine forward presence differs from the more forceful diplomacy expected of Britain's larger escorts. A 57 mm gun and two 40 mm weapons make Type 31 a useful flak frigate or sloop-like platform for sustained overseas basing. Type 26, Type 45, or the future Type 83 would provide the higher-impact response when a crisis demands greater visible weight. Crew size matters too, because formal diplomatic engagement requires people and facilities as well as weapons and endurance.
