The frigate label can conceal the Type 26's physical scale and fleet value. Its roughly 8,000-ton full-load displacement is comparable with the standard displacement of a Fiji-class cruiser and exceeds that of a Dido-class cruiser. That historical comparison reinforces concerns about close-in defence and the small number of ships being bought. Losing one Type 26 would remove a much larger share of modern British escort capability than the word frigate suggests.

A modern frigate with Second World War cruiser displacement
Type 26's full-load displacement exceeds that of some Second World War cruisers, making each of the eight planned British ships a scarce premium asset.
