Type 1936C showed how late German destroyer recovery had become

Z46 and Z47 were ordered in October 1941, halted in 1942, and never completed; accounts differ over when their unfinished hulls were broken up.

Notes

The proposed Type 1936C combined six 127 mm guns in three twin turrets with torpedoes, mines, depth charges, and substantial anti-aircraft armament. It reused a hull similar to the Type 1936A and almost identical machinery, including turbines originally intended for the scout cruisers. Even this continuation of established designs reached the ordering stage only in October 1941, when contracts covered Z46 and Z47. Work stopped in 1942, with accounts differing between January and May, and resumed in 1943. Bomb damage, delayed material supplies, and copper shortages slowed progress. The principal account places breakup after 1945, while other accounts describe Allied troops breaking up the hulls in 1945. Z48, Z49, and Z50 were never laid down. These delays left a promising specification unable to restore the depleted fleet.
