A 28-knot challenge in the Mediterranean

Fast Italian battleships would force the Royal Navy to reconsider its Mediterranean force and modernisation priorities.

Notes

A 28-knot capital ship could refuse combat with much of a slower battle fleet while denying conventional battlecruisers the three- or four-knot margin needed to disengage and outmanoeuvre it. That combination would make the Caracciolos a force-planning problem rather than an Italian technical curiosity. Britain would have to reconsider the Queen Elizabeth class and the speed allowed to Nelson and Rodney because the Mediterranean could no longer be treated as a theatre dominated by slower battleships. The effects would extend outward: a British response could alter Japanese plans for a fast battle line and therefore American calculations. The watch point shows how one ship's speed could affect planning across several navies.
