How faster Nelsons could reshape the battle fleet

A larger force of 28-knot Nelsons could have encouraged matching Queen Elizabeth modernisations and produced an eleven-ship fast battle fleet.

Notes

Six hypothetical 28-knot Nelsons could give the Royal Navy a reason to modernise the five Queen Elizabeths to the same speed. The example uses Warspite's refit, with six of eight boiler-room spaces retained for boilers and two used for other purposes. Using all eight is proposed as a possible route to 28 knots. If that worked, the fleet would have eleven battleships capable of the same higher speed. Both the larger Nelson programme and the more powerful Queen Elizabeth refits remain counterfactual.
