A turret explosion turns the first trial into a survival test

The first battle shows how a lost turret, depleted ammunition, flooding, and exposed casemates can overturn an otherwise tough battleship design.

Notes

A main turret explodes early, taking a large share of the British ship's heavy ammunition with it. The damaged vessel remains afloat and continues fighting with secondary guns and torpedoes, but progressive flooding soon makes abandoning ship more realistic than continuing the action. A severe list also interferes with gun depression unless a ship adopts an exceptional expedient such as USS Texas flooding one side to gain elevation. The trial tests magazine arrangements, ammunition endurance, watertight survival, and weapon placement alongside nominal armour thickness.
