Turret arcs and secondary guns shape the cruiser

A close reading of firing arcs explains the five-turret layout and the difference between the original Brooklyns and the St. Louis subclass.

Notes

The forward A and B turrets could fire on useful after bearings, helping a cruiser engage while withdrawing. The third forward mount had a more restricted arc because its blast had to remain clear of the superstructure. Secondary armament then distinguishes the ships: Brooklyn through Honolulu carried eight single 5-inch/25 guns, whereas St. Louis and Helena gained four twin 5-inch/38 dual-purpose mounts. The comparison connects firing arcs, superstructure placement, and anti-aircraft capability to the class's evolution rather than treating weapons as an isolated specification list.
