Turbines, industrial capacity, and early battlecruisers

British turbine sales and earlier investment helped the German Navy acquire high-speed battlecruiser capability before its own industrial base had matured.

Notes

German access to British turbines is credited with accelerating the arrival of German battlecruisers. This was not a question of German technical incapacity: building the infrastructure for reliable high-speed turbine production required time and capital. Britain's earlier investments, associated with Parsons and other suppliers, gave it a production advantage as well as a technological one. The comparison makes industrial readiness the product of accumulated investment and manufacturing capacity, rather than mere possession of a technical concept.
