The Navy had considered a future 4.5-inch fit, and Ark Royal illustrates how the gun was already making its way into service elsewhere. The intended destroyer mounting was unavailable in time, and the Tribals' 4.7-inch mountings had limited elevation. On many ships the twin mounting in X position, the second from aft, gave way to a high-angle twin 4-inch mounting. Its high-explosive shells were also useful against German Schnellboote and Italian fast attack craft.
