Cruiser types without the naval treaties

Without treaty truncation, cruiser development continues the prewar hierarchy instead of converging on one 10,000-ton standard.

Question

Would cruisers inevitably reach Alaska size without the interwar naval treaties?

Short answer

Some would, but a treatyless fleet would probably keep a mixed hierarchy of very large, light, and scout cruisers rather than make every cruiser enormous.

Notes

With capital ships above 45,000 tons, the largest cruisers could readily exceed 20,000 tons and approach Alaska scale because cruisers often ran to roughly half capital-ship displacement. The likely force would retain several tiers: a successor to the armored cruiser, middle-ranking light cruisers, and numerous scout cruisers, while battlecruisers moved fully into the capital-ship category.
